Pitch:

In Sicily, This Former Mafia Hideaway Empowers Migrant Women By Celebrating the Island’s Diverse Culinary Heritage

“Al Ciliegio” is an agritourism and restaurant in Salemi that serves traditional Sicilian cuisine made with organic products from local producers. Everything is handmade, even the pasta.

But that’s not all: behind the project is the non-profit “San Vito Onlus Foundation,” which has set itself the task of using land confiscated from the Mafia for social purposes, creating new opportunities for female migrants from North Africa. That’s why, alongside pasta alla Norma, you’ll also find couscous on the menu, a Tunisian specialty. Here, the migrant women have the chance to learn Italian and become integrated into the community through the sharing of recipes. From preparing mint tea to making baklava, “Al Ciliegio” is a shining example of integration in Sicily.

For VOGUE, I would love to tell the inspiring story behind this place through words and images and introduce readers to it for their next vacation. I also made sure to speak with many of the women about their personal stories and what this project means to them.

Would this be something for VOGUE?
