„In Pics“: the ancient traditions and modern culinary innovations of Armenia

Making lavash, the country's national bread, at Tsaghkunk restaurant, honoring tradition while moderninzing Armenian cuisine (Gohar Gareginyan und Anna Yesayan)

As one of the world’s oldest countries, Armenia captivates with its ancient culture, rich heritage and breathtaking natural beauty featuring vast landscapes dotted with age-old monasteries. At the same time, this historic land is becoming a fertile ground for chefs, winemakers, farmers and producers who are shaping its culinary future and putting Armenia on the global culinary map for the first time.

With Georgian cuisine (think khachapuri) all the rage in recent years, neighboring Armenia and its cuisine are on the rise among gourmets worldwide. Tsaghkunk Restaurant recently received the “Discovery Gem Award” at the prestigious “La Liste” gala in Paris, The Guardian recently mentioned that Armenia’s food scene deserves more attention and CN Traveller Middle East also recently published an article on “The best in Armenian cuisine”.

More info:

As a food and travel writer + photographer, I’ve explored Armenia for a full 6 months last year and I would love to highlight this lesser-known country off the beaten path for Nat Geo. While I was there, people kept telling me on social media that they were so surprised to see Armenia so vibrant and that they had no idea.

Here’s also a reel I recently shared that beautifully captures the energy of the Armenian people: https://www.instagram.com/p/DDPj97RNfWS/?hl=de
