The road to Myrto Zirini’s ceramics studio in the neighbourhood of Mouragia, in Corfu’s Old Town, runs directly alongside the sea. The water shimmers a dreamy blue, the small island of Vido lies just off the coast and Albania’s mountains rise in the distance. Upon entering the studio, two cats jump down from the shelves. “This is Puzzle and Corazón,” Myrto says by way of introduction. “They know full well they aren’t allowed to knock anything down,” she laughs. Displayed on the showroom’s shelves, the ceramicist’s delicate creations catch the eye in pastel shades: vibrant blue vases, vivid turquoise bowls and pale pink cups. Myrto has gained recognition as one of the bestknown ceramicists in Corfu, if not all of Greece, with regular exhibitions of her pieces. Her work is helping to keep the tradition alive in a country where it stretches back thousands of years.
